Cool Space #2

April 10, 2013

If you follow our blogs or twitter accounts, you’ll probably have worked out we like spaces being put to unusual uses. The Yard, on South Street, Aldereley Edge is a current favourite (Cool Space #1), but a very close runner for top spot has to be Camp & Furnace on Greenland Street in Liverpool.

The brazier is about all you’re going to get in terms of the place announcing itself, so it does take a bit of finding, in the maze of streets packed full of largely derelict warehouses – but which if Camp & Furnace is anything to go by, won’t be derelict for long. A buzzer operated door, thick green curtains – not so much for intrigue, probably more so due to the fact that the furnaces (and proper big, industrial furnaces) don’t present a hazard. And once inside – wowsers!

The main bar space is cavernous but heated by an enormous fire. Features include a communal dining table, floor to ceiling book shelves, bare light bulbs, MDF, log racks – all industrial and all beautiful. An exhibition room is off the bar – this area is used to show football (surely outside of the San Siro or Nou Camp, the coolest place to watch football), hold wedding receptions, play ping-pong etc. And stay in retro caravans…

And there’s more – and the final space is probably the coolest. This is where Sunday Lunch is served – and where you sit, again on a long communal table, and carve up your roast yourself, amongst your friends. And amongst yet more retro caravans…

Now, if only *someone* would see the potential of Gudrun Launderette on Burton Road, West Didsbury…
