An Evening with Pomegranate

December 7, 2012

If you’re a fan of Masterchef, you may know the name Afsaneh Kaviani – she appeared in the 2012 series, bringing her take on Persian cuisine to our TV screens. So, we were delighted to attend a recent pop-up evening where she was guest chef, at Pomegranate Restaurant in West Didsbury.

signIf you don’t know Pomegranate Restaurant, we really recommend that you become acquainted with it. Owner Sia is really stamping his mark on the West Didsbury foodie scene – and this event with Afsaneh was a perfect way to showcase a range of Persian dishes. Not everyone dining knew each other at the start of the evening – but by the end, we felt that Cath & Tim and Gwynn & Carys, our table companions, were old friends, due to the sociable, sharing nature of the food.

Although we knew beforehand what the menu would consist of, we weren’t really prepared for the amount of food – or the amazing flavours that we were about to experience. Smoked aubergine, quince, chicken that literally fell off the bone, the best rice we have ever tasted (Chelo, Baghali Polo & Morasa Polo – fluffy is an understatement!), okra, pomegranate ice-cream, pears poached in saffron and rose-water…

Although this was a special event at Pomegranate, it gives a flavour of what Sia is doing at this beautiful Burton Road restaurant. Clearly very proud of his heritage – the last event was a Persian Poetry Evening – he is determined to being the flavours of his culture to our little corner of South Manchester. Do go visit – you will not be disappointed.

With thanks to Sia for hosting the event and for his hospitality, Afsaneh for introducing us to wonderful new flavours and tastes, and Jana Bucalova for taking some of the beautiful images above.
