Wednesday 4th July – It’s Independents’ Day

June 29, 2012

So, come Wednesday 4th July, it won’t just be our cousins across the pond who’ll be celebrating. Because now 4th July has another connotation – it’s Independents’s Day. A day to focus on the unique businesses who make up the fabric of some of our high streets – some, because many have been taken over by coffee chains and express supermarkets. Our independents are being squeezed – and if we want to keep communities with individuality, maybe we should give them a bit of a pat on the back on Wednesday. And then continue doing so, because it’s not just about one day. It’s about a lifestyle…

We passionately believe in the spirit of independence which exists in West Didsbury, in particular. Each business has its own personality. Each offers something different – even those who could be considered to be competitors. Nearly all of the business colloborate with each other and with the wider community – and this is very evident throughout the year, not just on one day. We have WestFest, we have the Didsbury Wedding Event, we have CavFest, we have a very strong Twitter community, we’ve had a story written about us – and we are very proudly independent. If you don’t believe us, you just wait to see what have planned for WestFest 2012…

In the meantime, have a look here at some of what’s on offer in our little independent corner of South Manchester –
