A Super Supermarket for West Didsbury

April 5, 2012

We’re not short of many things in West Didsbury – apart from a decent supermarket. There’s a Tesco Express of course, because it’s the law that there has to be a Tesco every 100 yards. We’ve had Kwik Save and Somerfield which were pretty poor and then the Co-op came along, with very long queues and fairly limited choice. But that’s all changed – and a shiny new Co-op has arrived, complete with cash point, a huge selection of new products, staff who actually look happy to be there and a garland around the door…

OK, the flower garland may not last but we are very hopeful that everything else will. A quick chat with Steve, the store manager, revealed that the Co-op now has over 250 new lines, four self scan tills (as well as staffed tills) and 30% more parking space in the car-park. And, the new style Co-op in West Didsbury is the very first of these “fresh format” stores in the UK. Steve explained that they’ve tried to listen to what customers want and implement the ideas – and by the looks of things, they’ve got it spot on. The range of fresh produce is huge – great to see more unusual produce such as fennel and pak choi. Wines and beers are now refrigerated – hurrah! Pieminster pies were spotted in the fridge – and that’s a double hurrah!

If you’ve not been yet, do go and check it out – if this standard and quality and attention to detail can be maintained, then I for one will have a very good carbon footprint as it literally has everything I could need. Right on my West Didsbury doorstep…

Someone likes that blur effect a little bit too much.

Some people might say the same about Tesco. Guess it’s each to their own & it’s up to you where you spend your money. Not sure that people who shop there are “silly” though…
