A Night With Jarvis Cocker

A night with Jarvis Cocker...

A night with Jarvis Cocker...

So, despite the fact that there were over 500 chairs set out and it was an early sell-out, *I* was on a date with Jarvis. It had been inevitable really that he would succumb. OK, so Dave Haslam had to get in on the act, but I knew that Jarvis was really talking directly to me…

The evening began with Jarvis and a powerpoint presentation. How fab is that? But, there’s a flaw here. Everyone knows that when you really want a powerpoint to work, it won’t. That’s the law. I know that through years of believing that a powerpoint would make school meetings *so* much more interesting. But the bottom line is – they don’t work when  you want them to. And not even Jarvis could get the powerpoint to work. That’s because they’re rubbish – and talking is SO much better…

So, Dave & Jarvis chatted – “Common People”, “This Is Hard Core”, Sheffield, St Martin’s, the miners’ strike, cult of celebrity, Michael Jackson. An hour & fifteen minutes flashed by and before I knew it, it was time to say goodbye to Jarvis. Were it not for the long, snaking queue waiting for him to sign their books, I’m sure he’d have stayed and chatted longer with me…

That's Jarvis - talking to me...

That's Jarvis - talking to me. See - he's looking at me!

With thanks to Dave Haslam, Creative Tourist & Manchester Weekender.
