Sunday Night at Rhubarb, West Didsbury

June 19, 2011

Short and sweet this one – a last minute decision to head over to Rhubarb Restaurant for Sunday evening food. Good job we did phone ahead, as they’d clearly had a VERY busy day. Some dishes on the menu (both Set & A  la Carte) were simply “sold out”. Normally, you might be a bit miffed about this, especially as one (or more) of your initial choices is on the “sold out” list. But, Anne, Rhubarb’s front-of-house, and generally all round lovely person, was able to suggest alternatives, whilst at the same time looking after a packed restaurant.

So, what did we have? Chicken Liver Parfait and Roasted Sun Dried Tomato Soup for starters – another of those occasions when too hungry and too delicious to stop and take photos. Mains – no rib-eye steak. All gone. But medallions of lamb were offered in place of steak. Thankyou – delicioius! Sea bas fillet was amazing. Enough said.

I recommend the pannacotta @rhubarbdidsbury – ummm – good to see English cherries on the menu!

However, so popular had the pannacotta been, that  there was none left when we came to order. So, cheeseboard it was – seven cheeses, served at just the right temperature, perfectly sized portions and with just the right amount of home baked bread, crackers and chutney as an accompaniment. Plus a bit of West Didsbury drama going on outside. Road closed off. Fire engines x 2. Breathing apparatus. Sealed off cordon…

But, do you know what? It all turned out OK. Thankfully, all was alright across the road. But, despite two fire engines slewed across the road, there was still the angry driver who insisted on honking his horn to get past the emergency vehicles. Maybe, it was just the impending and gathering storm clouds which affected his mood…
