So, the market in Didsbury didn’t work for a number of reasons. This is a real shame, because it did have so much potential. But, it gave us a chance over here in West Didsbury to start investigating a market. Having worked with local businesses to put on WestFest we had a good idea of what would make a market succesful.

We’ve been working very closely with Manchester Markets to try and strike a balance between supporting local, independent business and introducing complementary, not competing, traders. Although there are still areas we need to work on, the feedback seems to have been very positive. The layout of  the market, on the forecourt of Withington Comunity Hospital, seemed to work well. You had to meander through the stalls, meaning that you visited stalls more than once. The market had a real community feel to it – not only did we bump into friends, but we actually made friends. A cake (baked by Silver Apples, and decorated with the West Didsbury mosaic created by Amanda McCrann for WestFest and taken from a photograph by Sian Astley – see, we all connect!) – was ceremoniously cut by the Lord Mayor.
