A Perfect Valentine’s Night…

We’ve no qualms about promoting Valentine’s Night – it’s one of those occasions where our local independent businesses go that extra mile. We know Sian from The Flower Lounge has packed in the hours, Anna from “And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon” raced from her Top Shop Pop-Up Shop to ensure that sweet toothed lovers weren’t disappointed & Joe from Pinchjo’s turned up the tempo with his Spanish inspired cuisine. There was definitely a  feeling of love in the Didsbury air.

However, here at Didsbury Life we’re not big lovers of Valentine’s Day – on a personal level. We’re a bit rubbish at lovey-doveyness. So we don’t usually head out on 14th February. However, this year was different and we were tempted by Guestrant at Chorlton’s Electrik Bar. We need declare here that Justin & Luke, who run Electrik are friends of old, going way back to 1985 when we meet as students at Manchester Poly. So, what better way to spend Valentine’s Night than with lovely friends?

Chef at this month’s Guestrant was Deanna Thomas, co-founder of North Star Delicatessen in Chorlton. Her passion for locally sourced produce was obvious from the outset, as was her originality of menu choices. The starter was an “English Breakfast Salad” – packed full with black bacon from The Cheshire Smokehouse, full &  flavoursome Bury Black Pudding, quails eggs , roasted tomatoes & mushrooms on a bed of leaves. De-bloody-licious….

Main course was something I’ve never contemplated before – venison. From Tatton Park. I did have a moment when I regretted not going for the veggie option, but hey – it was Guestrant, so I thought I’d roll with it. Having dabbled with being a vegetarian and fallen off the wagon – much like Justin & Birgitta, our partners in crime for the evening – I thought I might as well just go for it. Deanna talked us through the course and it sounded fantastic. Peppered Tatton venison, pickled shallots, celeriac mash, potato cake, shredded vegetables and a chocolate infused gravy… wow!

Dessert was beyond divine – and perfect for Valentine’s night. A Chocolate Torte served with the most amazing mousse. Apologies to Deanna, who undoubtedly slaved all day over a hot stove, but this was Angel Delight with bells on. (Hope she forgives us, but we are children of the ’70s and such a dessert accompaniment was the height of panache!)

All in all – a perfect Valentine’s Night. Fabulous food and great friends. Who could ask for more?
