Christmas Comes to Cavendish, West Didsbury

Teaching older kids, I sometimes forget how exciting Christmas can be. For most of us it means stress, stress and a bit more stress with huge over-spending, sprinkled with the odd party here and there. However, this afternoon at Cavendish Primary School’ s Christmas Fair, I was reminded of how great a time of year this can be – through the eyes of a child.

It was a proper old fashioned School Fair – just like the ones at my junior school, many moons ago. Stalls staffed by parents, who if the truth be told would probably rather have been sitting around the roaring fire at The Metropolitan, but who did the right thing and manned tombola stalls, Name The Teddy Stall, Guess The Weight of The Xmas Cake stall etc etc. Even Janet, the head (she of slight swoon when Clint Boon turned on the West Didsbury lights) was on the door – and I’m totally positive she might have had more to do on a cold, wet Saturday afternoon than sit in draughty corridor collecting admission monies! However, everyone pitched in  – and as result, those who it was meant for – the kids – had a whale of a time.

Again, completely forgetting that a School Xmas Fair is a highlight in many children’s social calendars, I got there slightly after the publicised 1.00pm start. It was clear that it had been a frenzied start – many painted faces were already running around the school hall, some stalls had literally been stripped bare (these seemed to be the ones with a cake/confectionary theme) and poor Santa had a queue stretching almost out to Cavendish Road.

The Bouncy Castle was a bit of a hit – and an great way to get to the children to slide/run off their excess energies. Although again, as parents stood watching and holding shoes, coats, wellies, glasses etc there did seem to be that collective thought of the roaring fire in The Metropolitan 🙂

So, Father Christmas has departed for another year – maybe off to the next school Xmas Fair – but word on  the street is that Cavendish has once again raised a neat little sum of money, all to go back into school funds. And seeing those happy faces, it was lovely to contribute in a just a very small way today.

... it wouldn't a Xmas Fair without a Xmas Cake
