Green Tea Didsbury Official Launch Party

For those of us who’ve been involved in the refurbishment of The Green Tea Restaurant, in West Didsbury, there’ve been times when we thought the official opening would never come! However, on Friday evening, we made it! And what a launch…

Jenny and Shona, the beautiful Green Tea girls, really pushed out the boat. In their typically quirky fashion, they had a red carpet outside the restaurant and Chinese lanterns bobbing in the tree outside. We’ve got to know this restaurant very intimately over the last two months and thought we’d seen it in all its many guises – but on Friday, when eveything came together, even we were blown away by just amazing it looked! The capiz shell lights were stunning, as were the crystal droplet wall lights – and the burnt orange wallpaper… well, let’s just it was worth the wait for this! I certainly haven’t been to many parties where the wallpaper was a topic of conversation!

However, it wasn’t just about the decor. It was also about the food. As well as stripping back the interiors, along with Jenny and Shona, we also stripped back the menus to their signature dishes. The girls worked with Mike Bach, a Didsbury based personal trainer, and as well as their a la carte menu, they now have a Healthy Option Menu, and the buffet featured dishes from both menus.

The initial part of the evening involved filming for the website – this was actually rather glamorous and glitzy as Hannah and Michael, the film makers, shot their vox-pops. The results of the filming will be uploaded onto the new website very soon – and we’re very excited about this part of the project.

Like anything that we’re involved in, we always try to see ways we can collaborate. This project was an absolute no-brainer in terms of collaboration. From the start of the project, we worked with Sian & Martin and their team (Moregeous), sometimes well into the night – and an amazing friendship has been created. Sometimes, we wonder what we did before we knew them! Then we had Gregg from Cactus Designs who worked on the signage and the window graphics and frosting (finishing touches being put to Gregg’s new website so don’t want to reveal anything just yet…), Ian Ali who did a sterling job with the exterior painting job, Andrew Maunsell who installed new lighting, Marc the Printers from the Northern Quarter who turned the menus around in double quick time and West Didsbury Painting & Carpentry for restoring a tired and sad cabinet back to its former glory – and it now takes pride of place in the restaurant.

Sian, from The Flower Lounge, Didsbury, created the most beautiful centrepiece display with rostrata heliconia – simply stunning! The green theme was carried through to the complimentary cocktails, the girls having had a lesson from Oli, the manager at Rhubarb Restaurant and cocktail maker extraordinaire, and to the mini cupcakes, by Didsbury’s AiryFairy Cup Cakes. The wine was also supplied locally – thanks to Reserve on Burton Road.

As well as being a great event to celebrate the relaunch of the restaurant, it was also an opportunity for new and old friends to get together, over some  fabulous food. Lovely to once again see Jo and Si, Paul T, Paul D, Allie, Jane, Matt & Jonathan, Liz & Gary, Lawrence & Liz, Rowena, Katie – and the irrepresible Dave –

So, all in all, a lovely evening in very glamorous surroundings, with gorgeous food and lovely friends. We finally made it!

Here’s to Jenny & Shona for creating a menu and atmosphere that’s a million miles away from ‘your average Chinese restaurant’. Love the fact that they’re bring authentic North Eastern Chinese food to life and right here for us South Manchester dwellers to enjoy. And here’s also to everyone who collaborated to bring their restaurant brand vision to life. Look forward to returning for a proper ‘sit down’ experience – sticky chilli chicken at the top of my wish list!
