Years ago, a good Friday night meant getting out of work as early as possible and forgetting about everything work related until that awful moment on a Sunday evening when you knew the weekend was drawing to a close and the monotony of the working week was about to begin again. How times have changed.

Every couple of months, at Didsbury Life we rotate the art in the office and one of the best parts about doing this is having a Friday night exhibition. We’ve been so looking forward to this latest exhibition by mosaic artist, Amanda McCrann. We met Amanda over Twitter, but then it transpired that we knew Amanda (and her partner, Mike – more of him later) – of old, so an immediate connection was established. Amanda is genuinely one of the most beautiful people we have ever met. And, the preview we held at Didsbury Life just reinforced this…

Amanda recently produced our fantastic “Didsbury Life” mosaic signage, as well as the “West Didsbury” mosaic which was completed over WestFest2010 and now installed on the gable end wall of Folk Cafe Bar. So, we had an idea that her installations would be pretty spectacular – but we hadn’t really accounted for just how amazing they would be…

So, the night started with more wine than we thought capable of being consumed – however, the Saturday morning trip to the bottle bank soon put us right on that one! Lovely canapes were provided, once again, by Folk Cafe Bar – very big thanks to them. And then, the guests arrived. Amanda and Mike’s extended family arrived en masse – and what a lovely family. Lovely to meet Aunty Barbara, back home from South Carolina, Maria, Portia, Jake and Conor. Also lovely to see Norma (Amanda’s mum) and Chris (Mike’s brother). It was also great to finally meet up with Alison Bell – we’ve talked so much over Twitter, and have so many mutual friends, that our first “real” meeting, felt like a meeting of old friends.

There was much meeting of new and old friends. People we’ve met via Twitter and Didsbury Life mingled with friends we’ve known for a long time. So, it was lovely to see Liz Gregory (now a regular at our events) chatting to Dave Haslam, her “tutor” from The Folk Music school. It was great to see Alex and Tom and Matt all making common ground. Anita, our previous exhibitor, was there, as was Rowena – the author of the lovely “Tale of SIA”.

But Amanda wasn’t the only artist at the preview. Her partner, Mike Garry, is a poet. As an English teacher, I love words. I love hearing people playing with words. And we were privileged to have Mike performing at Didsbury Life. We’ve seen him a few times before – you may have been lucky to have caught him at WestFest – but to see him in such intimate surroundings as our office was a bit special. It’s safe to say  that Mike stopped everyone in their tracks. No mean feat at 11.oopm on a Friday night when many of those bottles of wine had been consumed –

So, back to where this blog started. In the past, wanting to escape from work to start the weekend. These days, we love staying at work to begin our weekend, with art, wine, poetry – and most all, great friends.
