If you’re a reader of this blog, you might have got the idea that this summer has been fairly hectic, what with WestFest and Project Green Tea, as well as the normal runnings of our own business. So, it’s been nice to meet up and work with Anna & James, the couple behind Burton Road’s latest independent business, “And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon“. Since taking over the premises at 230 Burton Road, a month ago from Mark Feneley (who’s gone off to pastures new to focus on his other job as an Artists’ Agent), they’ve been extremely busy.

They’ve had to reconfigure what was Novus Contemporary Art Gallery, to accommodate a large kitchen at the back – the hub of Anna’s baking company. As impressed as I was by the vast stainless steels cookers and fridges and cupboards, what really caught my eye was Anna’s attention to design detail. She’s spent part of this summer sourcing eclectic and vintage accessories to supplement the hi-tec kitchen. My favourite piece has to be the retro 1950s kitchen cupboard, which will soon be in its full glory –

Since getting the keys, building work has continued at a furious pace, and although still not quite ready, the shop did a roaring trade over WestFest. Anna set up a stall outside, baked for England, roped in willing helpers – and sold out. Not a crumb left.

As well as WestFest and the shop renovation, they’ve also had four weddings, Proms in the Park, Salford Freshers Tea Party, Manchester Food and Drink Festival until 10th October. Anna also understands our mantra of “collaboration” and has already worked with Silver Apples, Living Flowers and David Gavin Designs. She’s also teased us with another “exciting collaboration” lined up for this autumn, but is keeping hush about this one!

The interior is now being worked on. Anna has sourced some vintage jelly mould lights from reclamation yards, a carful of vintage baking paraphernalia from Liverpool, including original Mason & Cash mixing bowls & 1950s Sunbeam mixers, some amazing furniture from antique dealers (including their beautiful retro wooden counters) and there’ll be a beautiful window display made from vintage wine and French apple crates.

Like our recent project with Green Tea Restaurant, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. We didn’t account for dry rot, and unfortunately Anna and her building team probably didn’t account for an explosion of expandable foam in the yard. All makes for an interesting project though 🙂

The shop is due to open 15th October when amongst other things, the seven winners in our recent competition with And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon, will be invited in to collect their prizes over opening weekend.
