Rocking Out On Sunday…

"Love" Mosaic - Rock & Respite

"Love" Mosaic - Rock & Respite

Sundays are usually fairly sedate days for Didsbury Life and certainly Sunday evenings are generally a bit of a no-go in terms of going out. Our days of living up it and then starting a busy week are long gone. However, an exception was made this Sunday.

And the exception was made because of our lovely friend, Stephen Campbell. We “met” him over Twitter. He’d posted some iconic Manchester band images which caught our eye, so we started following him. Then, we bonded over our mutual despair at the level of service offered by Virgin Media – and a friendship was formed. At the start of the summer, we bonded again. Stephen was starting to plan a benefit for Francis House in Didsbury. (His daughter, Elizabeth has respite care at Francis House). I was in the throes of planning WestFest2010 and we became mutual supporters as we hit highs and lows in the organisation of the two events and we started to promote the benefit gig on Didsbury Life.

Then, as these things do, it took on a life of its own. Stephen’s contacts in the world of the Manchester music scene started appearing on a growing events list. The auction started to take off, and then Kate Butler stepped in and took things to a whole new level. A website appeared literally overnight, more bands were added to the event listing, more donations came in for the auction – including the beautiful “Love” mosaic, created by Amanda McCrann. The name “Rock & Respite” was born.

And then it was suddenly Sunday 19th September. The venue was Sound Control in Manchester. The DJ was Clint Boon. The music was incredible. The atmosphere electric. And Sunday became the new Friday…

So will Sundays ever be the same again? Rock & Respite. A great way to both end the weekend and begin the week. It’s not often, on a Sunday evening, when you enjoy fabulous music and catch up with lovely friends – Sian, Sian (same looking name, different people) Stephen & Fiona, Mike & Amanda & Norma to name but a few.

Rock & Respite – fabulous name for a fabulous cause…
