A Day Out In The Country

August 24, 2010

Not so long ago, we used to spend some of the long six weeks summer holiday (come on, there has to be some pay off for being a teacher!), lazing on Greek beaches, soaking up the sunshine. Summer now however, means – yes, still six weeks off from school – but largely six weeks devoted to Didsbury Life, WeAreLife and WestFest. And rain. And more rain. And quick breaks taken when we can.

This summer we have been lucky – two weddings at the start of the holidays and a few jaunts to see UK based friends and family, as well as a couple of quite nice sunny days. We also took in a trip to the lovely NE to see family and we timed it just right. The Slaley Country Show in the gorgeous Northumberland countryside. So, after borrowing (and in one case, going out & buying) wellies and waterproofs, we were ready. Ready to hit the Country Show…

Now, if you’re going to have cattle, this is what we like. A bit on the cool side! Although that leg’s a bit on the mucky side – but, hey, we’re in the country. Now, we get excited in Didsbury when we see animals other than cats and pigeons. A walk along The Mersey can produce much excitement if there’s a fly-over of geese. So, we felt well and truly wild at heart with some of the fantastic creatures being shown at the show :

Here in Didsbury, with a group of friends and Ben from Thyme Out Deli, we’ve started embracing the Good life, growing our own produce. Oli, from Rhubarb Restaurant, has been cutting the rhubarb from our garden and transforming it into magical cocktails. He swears it’s the best rhubarb – ever. So, imagine our surprise when we saw this rhubarb had been awarded FIRST PRIZE –

Now, we’re not rhubarb afficionados and run the risk of being shot down by experts, BUT the Thyme Out Deli rhubarb is miles better. Just ask Oli…

And – let’s talk tea & cakes. Now if you have a category, “Tea for One” – a) surely no one having tea for one would have ten sugar lumps in a bowl and b) surely the winner can’t also come second… Strange things going on in the North East, but it’s given us an idea for WestFest!

Personal favourite of the day though – and this was hotly debated, as one member of our party wanted to elect the category “Grass in a Jam Jar” (genius!) – was the Silage category. I leave you with the  image…

So, bookings now being taken for Didsbury Life on Tour next summer – don’t all rush at once!
