Life’s A Beach…

June 27, 2010

Since the last blog post a lot has happened in the world of football. On Thursday, Italy, Didsbury Life’s team, crashed out of The World Cup in dismal style and just this afternoon, England joined them. So, it’s just as well we’ve had a diversion here in West Didsbury this weekend.

Yes, we awoke on Friday morning to three tonnes of sand being dumped in front of Folk Cafe Bar – but by mid afternoon, what could have been a building site, had been transformed into a beach…

This was billed as a pre-Ibiza party. Team Folk is heading there in July to spread the Folk word, and sitting there on Friday evening it did feel distinctly Mediterranean. Children happily mingled with the sun-worshipping adults. Sandcastles and sand sculptures were made – and demolished – but no one minded.

The atmosphere was relaxed, happy and child friendly – and this has continued all weekend. The weather has obviously helped, but Neil & Loz who organised it, and all the staff at Folk who kept their many customers [old & new alike] very happy, must be thanked for their efforts.

Customers from Rhubarb Restaurant, seemed entirely unfazed by the good-natured beach party going on next door. In fact, it was really good to see people dining outside and children playing happily not too far away. It was certainly a talking point! Folk’s resident DJs, including Balearic Mike and Nick, of The Acid Tree, kept the music flowing and gave people a taste of what to expect from the Folk Ibiza Experience.

The weekend has been a really lovely example of what happens when small businesses take a risk. As a small business ourselves, we know that taking a risk, is – well, risky. But sometimes you’ve just got to do it. Undoubtedly, the weather has helped. Given the past three summers we’ve had, it’s again been a calculated risk, but a risk that Folk was prepared to take and it’s paid off. We saw lots of new faces who we’re sure will return again because they had such a unique experience. We’re sure that parents who may not have visited Folk before, will return again, because their children were made so welcome – and this isn’t a one off. We know of two young ladies – take a bow, Lucy and Ava – who are made as welcome as any paying adults and are now part of the fabric of Folk.

As the weekend draws to a close, and even though various football results may not have gone the way we might have wanted them to go, at least we can reflect on the fact that we’re very lucky to live in such close proximity to such unique and individual businesses – who make our weekends that little bit more special…

Well done Neil and Loz – we had a great time. Saw you cleaning up the sand this evening and would’ve offered to help but…
