The 30th Didsbury Festival couldn’t have been held on a better day this year. With rain & cold winds often being the usual order of the day in June in Manchester, we’ve often missed the festival, preferring to sit around the log fires in The Didsbury to keep warm!

However, 2010 couldn’t have been more different. Although we missed the parade – being at the first Didsbury Food Market – we did hear that Cavendish Primary School’s Samba Band and Dancers performed well, winning the parade trophy.

By the time Didsbury Life arrived at Didsbury Park things were already hotting up – penalty shoot-outs, many sporting activities with lots of screaming children, a rock band [since found out, ex-pupils – note to self – be more observant!], and a good old fashioned fun fair with shuggy boat rides and a carousel. And – this all before getting into the park proper.

Although having the good fortune of having a day that’s a bit of a scorcher, credit does have to be given to the festival organisers. This year seemed so much bigger and better – and although old favourites such as The Dog Show were still crowd pullers – we spotted a lot of new entertainment.

The belly dancing troupe was highly entertaining and certainly added a splash of colour and Middle Eastern mystique.

The Tag Rugby Competition, involving the Didsbury primary schools, was really compelling – especially the final between Didsbury C of E and Cavendish Primary. With seconds to go, and the score level at 5-5, Cavendish suddenly powered ahead to slam down the ball and snatch victory. Don’t think we’ve seen such exuberant celebrations since Italy won the last World Cup!

All in all, this festival was a real success and a great way to highlight what happens when a community works together. And, when the sun shines, it’s the icing on the cake – although the best cakes were still to be found at The Didsbury Food Market down the road…
