M20 - West Didsbury Earth Hour 2010

UPDATE 31 MARCH 2012 –

So, it’s two years since we blogged about Earth Hour in West Didsbury – and what a lot has happened since! It seems really fitting that on the anniversary of Earth Hour 2010,  we’ve locked our office door for the last time and are embarking on some really exciting plans. Just like our fabulous friend Sian, who worked with us in persuading the businesses to switch off their lights. So, at 8.30pm we’ll be lighting the candles – and raising a glass to a very bright future…

In the meantime, check out the video below to see how West Didsbury supported Earth Hour.

*****************************************************************

After much planning, West Didsbury really threw itself into supporting Earth Hour 2010 and for an hour, on Saturday evening, a bit more darkness than usual descended on Burton Road and Lapwing Lane…

The initial idea had been to approach bars and restaurants to be involved as they’d be open at the time Earth Hour was happening. When we got such an enthusiastic response, we realised that ALL businesses, whether open or closed, could take part – and so, with adjsuting of timers, shops and salons, normally not open at 8.30pm on a Saturday evening, were able to join in too.

It was fantastic to see that by Saturday afternoon, businesses were displaying their Earth Hour posters, signalling their intent to be involved in this global event. Saturday afternoon also saw the last few, who we hadn’t had the chance to speak previously, sign up – TJs the Barbers, The Co-op & The Charcoal Pit.

So, Saturday evening arrived and we just weren’t sure what the response would be – after all, it does seem just a bit odd to be switching off your lights at your busiest time on probably your busiest day of the week!

But, West Didsbury certainly put on a Lights Off Show and from 8.30, the lights were definitely dimmed and candles, tealights, lanterns and candelabras came out! Bars and restaurants rose to the challenge of serving food and drinks in semi-darkness, and shops and salons were plunged into total darkness as the timers kicked in.

Whilst it was a bit of a “fun” event, being part of West Didsbury’s Earth Hour has definitely made me just a little bit more aware of my own carbon footprint – I’m trying not leave things on standby and I’m trying to remember to switch off lights when I leave a room. Very small things, but at least it’s a start!

Thanks to all of the West Didsbury businesses who participated with so much enthusiasm and good spirit, and to Sian Astley who very creatively put together West Didsbury Earth Hour – The Movie…
